Question 18 of 22

Can adults get braces?

Yes. Adults can absolutely get braces. Orthodontic treatment is not only for children and teenagers. Many adults choose braces or Invisalign because their teeth have shifted, they never had orthodontic treatment when they were younger, they are preparing for dental work, or they want to improve their smile and bite.

Adult orthodontic treatment can address crowding, spacing, relapse after previous braces, bite problems, tooth wear, cosmetic concerns, and difficulty cleaning crowded teeth. Some adults also need orthodontics before implants, crowns, veneers, bonding, or other restorative dental treatment.

Adult orthodontics can be different from teen orthodontics. Adults are no longer growing, and they may have more dental history. This can include fillings, crowns, implants, missing teeth, gum recession, bone loss, root canal treatment, or worn teeth. These factors do not necessarily prevent orthodontic treatment, but they do need to be considered in the treatment plan.

Adults may have several treatment options. Some are good candidates for Invisalign or clear aligners. Others may benefit from metal braces, ceramic braces, limited orthodontic treatment, or a combined approach involving the orthodontist and general dentist.

Many adults worry that braces will look too noticeable. Modern orthodontic options can often be more discreet than patients expect. Invisalign, ceramic braces, and carefully planned limited treatment may be appropriate depending on the case. You can even choose your braces colours.
