Question 22 of 22

What is orthodontic relapse? Can teeth move with age?

Orthodontic relapse means that teeth shift after orthodontic treatment. This can happen after braces, Invisalign, expanders, or other orthodontic care. Relapse may be mild, such as slight crowding of the lower front teeth, or more noticeable, such as spaces reopening, rotations returning, or the bite changing.

Relapse happens because teeth are part of a living system. The bone, gums, lips, cheeks, tongue, bite forces, oral habits, and aging process can all influence tooth position. Retainers reduce the risk of relapse, but they do not make the teeth permanently fixed in place.

Teeth can also move with age, even in people who never had orthodontic treatment. Many adults notice that their lower front teeth become more crowded over time, or that their bite feels different than it used to. Some people notice spaces opening, teeth rotating, or old orthodontic results changing.

Age-related tooth movement can happen for several reasons. Long-term chewing forces, clenching, grinding, gum recession, bone changes, tooth loss, old dental work, and natural changes in the jaws can all affect tooth position. If retainers were prescribed after previous orthodontic treatment but are no longer worn, movement is even more likely.

Orthodontic relapse does not always mean something went wrong. In many cases, it reflects the natural tendency of teeth to shift over time. This is why long-term retainer wear is so important.

Patients who notice shifting should not assume nothing can be done. Minor relapse may be corrected with limited orthodontic treatment. More significant relapse may require braces, Invisalign, or a more comprehensive plan. Adults can get braces at any age.

At Orthodontics on Queen in The Beaches, Toronto, patients are encouraged to think of orthodontic stability as long-term maintenance. Braces or Invisalign create the result. Retainers and follow-up care help protect it as the mouth continues to change over time.
