Question 20 of 22
Most orthodontic problems are uncomfortable but not true emergencies. A loose bracket, poking wire, lost elastic, broken retainer, or sore tooth can often be managed temporarily until the orthodontic office provides guidance. However, severe pain, swelling, infection, trauma, or injury to the teeth or face should be addressed promptly.
For a poking wire, orthodontic wax can be placed over the sharp area. If the wire is very long or causing injury, the office should be contacted for advice.
For a loose bracket, if it is still attached to the wire and is not causing pain, it can often be left in place until the office gives instructions. Patients should not try to repair the bracket themselves.
For a broken elastic chain or colour tie, the office can advise whether it needs to be repaired quickly or whether it can wait until the next visit.
For a lost Invisalign aligner, the office should be contacted. Depending on the situation, the patient may be advised to wear the previous aligner, move to the next aligner, or pause until further instructions.
For soreness after an adjustment, soft foods, cold drinks, orthodontic wax, and over-the-counter pain relief if appropriate can help. Learn more about how braces feel.
For mouth sores or rubbing, orthodontic wax can make the area more comfortable while the lips and cheeks adapt.
For trauma to the teeth or face, patients should contact their dentist, orthodontist, or an emergency dental provider. If there is significant injury, swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, or concern about the jaw or face, urgent medical care may be needed.
Note that in emergency situations, the patient can seek help from either the orthodontics office, and/or the general dentistry office. Both are usually capable of making the patient feel comfortable. Learn about the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist.
